The Power of Acceptance: Embracing Change for a Brighter Future
It's so weird that I went to rehab. I always said that I would die before I went to rehab. But I thought, 'I'm going to stay here tonight.' And I stayed there for a month. It was great. ~Lindsay Lohan
It is doubtful that inpatient addiction treatment is something many of us will have had on our bucket list before up until the time of actually going there – it is more likely to be an option we feel compelled to choose. It is therefore often a surprise to find that going to drug rehab can actually be an enjoyable experience. Here are just 5 reasons for why addiction treatment can be more fun than you think:
It can be incredibly hard for family and friends to understand our behavior when we are caught up in addiction. It may sometimes feel as if we are speaking a different language, and this can be incredibly frustrating – we can feel so alone. One of the great benefits of going to rehab is that you will be surrounded by people who understand what it is like to struggle with addiction. There can be a wonderful sense of camaraderie and deep connection because at last there are people who get you.

One of the main reasons we remain trapped in alcoholism or other forms of addiction is because of distorted thinking. We can believe that drinking or substance abuse offers our only real chance of enjoyment and comfort in life, but this is the greatest lie. During your time in rehab, you will begin to see things a new way, and this new way of thinking will become a source of hope, optimism, and excitement.
One of the reasons many of us turn to alcohol or other substance abuse in the first place is we are trying to escape negative emotions. The reality is that it is not possible to only escape the feelings we don’t like – we can only experience joy to the extent that we are willing to experience sadness. During your time in rehab, your emotions will begin to thaw, and this means you can begin to experience a great passion for life again.
It usually doesn’t take long in rehab before you begin to understand how addiction has cost you dearly. The fact that you have been regularly intoxicated or suffering with the aftereffects of intoxication will have impacted your ability to make good decisions. Now that you are sober, you can make much better choices, and this will lead to a better future. You don’t have to be a believer in karma to understand that doing bad things generally leads to bad results but doing good things generally leads to good results.
