The Power of Acceptance: Embracing Change for a Brighter Future
You say you want to be polished and pure, but then you complain about rough handling. ~ Rumi
Going through quality drug rehab is not easy, nor for the faint of heart. It is hard work for our guests to face those things that they have been avoiding. Ways of avoiding can take many forms: alcohol, nicotine, cocaine or other drugs, food addiction, people-pleasing, working too much, gambling or gaming, and the list goes on.
Many people go to addiction recovery centers for reasons other than wanting to get sober and healthy. They may go to an alcohol residential treatment center because they are sent by a spouse, parent, child, employer or the judicial system. There are lots of programs out there for those folks. We’ve heard all about them. These are the places where the client has a tv and DVD player in their bedroom. There is a large and comfortable smoking area. There is lots of opportunity to sit and drug-a-log with the other clients. There are a few films shown about addiction, a few group sessions, and a big graduation ceremony for completing the 28 days. These types of treatment rehabilitation centers ensure themselves of repeat clients. We’ve met people who have gone to upwards of a dozen alcohol treatment centers. Many people though, come to an alcohol rehab treatment center because they have hit their personal bottom, and they know that if they don’t get this, they will be locked up or covered up. And many of these people believe they are willing to do anything to recover. Until the work begins.
Breaking down the thick walls of denial that have kept the alcoholic “safe” from dealing with reality, doesn’t happen with a simple push, or knock on the wall, it takes a dedicated team of professionals to get through, and more importantly, a desire and willingness on the part of the guest. At Serenity Vista, we approach this wall from many different angles. They include intensive group processing, canine therapy, deliciously healthy and fresh food three times a day, spiritual practice through meditation and discussion, recreation like horse back riding, zip lining, sound therapy, yoga, massage and more!
The work though is still work, and many people can be very resistant. Like a starving person who refuses food, the behavior can be very frustrating and concern for the team. We know that if they ‘don’t eat’, they will likely die. By having a rehab with no more than 6 guests, in an intimate setting, we really get to know our guests. Through spending so much time with them, and getting to know their story and personality so well, each individual counselor pulls out what they think will help the guest open themselves to dismantling the wall.
We are not a ‘one-size fits all’ program. With the norms of the group, each guest is treated with all the respect and dignity they deserve. They are treated with empathy and caring. But we know that no rough stone ever became polished by getting pats on the backs. Our guests are challenged daily to see the truth of their lives, the parts of their lives they know in their gut to be true, but have avoided looking at. When the guest is ready, when truly willing and open, we see that wall finally fall down in a puff of dust, everything changes. It is worth all of the frustration and perseverance day after day. We rejoice with our guests and honor their process, knowing that even the resistance was part of what they had to go through.
